{"id":77932,"date":"2023-06-20T14:04:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T13:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=77932"},"modified":"2023-06-20T14:04:27","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T13:04:27","slug":"cardiffs-commuters-walk-or-cycle-more-than-others-in-wales-but-they-still-rely-heavily-on-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/06\/20\/cardiffs-commuters-walk-or-cycle-more-than-others-in-wales-but-they-still-rely-heavily-on-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff\u2019s commuters walk or cycle more than others in Wales \u2013 but they still rely heavily on driving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Over 40% of Cardiffians drive to work, despite the 20 railway stations around the city<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>CARDIFF\u2019S workforce walks or cycles more than others in Wales \u2013 but commuters still rely heavily on cars to drive to work in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost 12.5% of Cardiff\u2019s workforce walk or cycle to work, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/datasets\/TS061\/editions\/2021\/versions\/4\">Census 2021<\/a> data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is higher than any other Welsh local authority, with Gwynedd and Ceredigion following closely behind with the most active commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/hrRe8\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"799\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/hrRe8\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"799\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>While Cardiff\u2019s active commuting numbers are Wales\u2019 highest, 40% of Cardiff\u2019s workforce still drives a car to work. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city has 20 railway stations, yet the number of Cardiffians that choose to drive to work is over 35 times those that use a form of train travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if drivers don\u2019t make the switch to active travel, using public transport instead decreases carbon dioxide emission by 45%, <a href=\"https:\/\/transportation.ucla.edu\/blog\/5-environmental-benefits-sustainable-transportation\">according to UCLA.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Dan De\u2019ath, Cardiff Council cabinet member for transport, is hoping the ongoing work to build the South Wales Metro will change Cardiff\u2019s reliance on cars for commuting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe expect it to be transformational. New rolling stock, more frequent and reliable services that will be better integrated with buses and active travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will take a little time, but will have a major impact when complete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is hoped the South Wales Metro will be completed in 2024, but there are also plans for a Cardiff Crossrail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun De\u2019ath wants this to shift Cardiffians away from their reliance on cars to sustainable travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits of switching the way you travel are not just environmental. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/07-06-2022-cycling-and-walking-can-help-reduce-physical-inactivity-and-air-pollution--save-lives-and-mitigate-climate-change#:~:text=Emerging%20evidence%20shows%20the%20importance,of%20carbon%20emissions%20from%20vehicles.\">The World Health Organisation<\/a> said that &#8220;walking for 30 minutes or cycling for 20 minutes on most days reduces mortality risk by at least 10%&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun De\u2019ath believes that Cardiff\u2019s \u201cflat and compact\u201d landscape is part of the reason why Cardiff is such a great city for active travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff\u2019s commuters are the most active out of the nation\u2019s three cities, with only 7.9% of Newport\u2019s workforce walking or cycling to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swansea\u2019s workers have similar travel habits as only 8% commute through active travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Welsh Government has tried to prioritise the promotion of active travel through the Active Travel Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was introduced in 2013 and made sure that local authorities provided maps of active travel routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some urban areas are still reliant on cars to travel to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topping the list of Wales\u2019 least active commuters are those in Caerphilly and Torfaen, with only 6% of workers cycling or walking to their place of work in each areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over 40% of Cardiffians drive to work, despite the 20 railway stations around the city<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":903,"featured_media":77934,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[92,2,3],"tags":[6937,52,692,4745,406,50,51,1189],"coauthors":[8090],"class_list":["post-77932","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-city","category-featured","category-news","tag-active-travel","tag-cardiff-council","tag-cycling","tag-south-wales-metro","tag-trains","tag-transport","tag-travel","tag-walking"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
