{"id":80672,"date":"2023-12-18T15:23:41","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T15:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=80672"},"modified":"2024-06-20T22:01:20","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T21:01:20","slug":"family-which-set-up-own-foodbank-to-help-friends-through-covid-needs-donations-to-meet-spiralling-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/12\/18\/family-which-set-up-own-foodbank-to-help-friends-through-covid-needs-donations-to-meet-spiralling-demand\/","title":{"rendered":"Family which set up own foodbank to help friends through Covid needs donations to meet spiralling demand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;<em>All Year Round&#8217; supports families in need across Cardiff but the cost-of-living-crisis means demand is outstripping donations<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DURING the Covid pandemic, Tara and David Beverstock started helping their close friends and family get hold of \u201clittle things that would cheer them up.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what began as a family affair quickly grew into an online community of 1,200 members and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/431752517994785\">All Year Round<\/a>\u2019 &#8211; the community group it blossomed into &#8211; now supports families in need across Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beverstock family understood how it felt to struggle to put food on the table. In 2013 they used a food bank themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara said: \u201c(I&#8217;ve) seen first-hand how working families are struggling. They have also donated meals to Heath Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lhr8-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.15752-9\/404957373_901311680978300_8212308931790815517_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=8cd0a2&amp;_nc_ohc=DxgmWDDP48MAX_srkte&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lhr8-2.xx&amp;oh=03_AdRhBwGIC46PBz3s5CdSGcXarHG-g7XFEJ-e7HduVFAHSQ&amp;oe=6596926C\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:252px;height:auto\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lhr8-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.15752-9\/404957373_901311680978300_8212308931790815517_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=8cd0a2&amp;_nc_ohc=DxgmWDDP48MAX_srkte&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lhr8-2.xx&amp;oh=03_AdRhBwGIC46PBz3s5CdSGcXarHG-g7XFEJ-e7HduVFAHSQ&amp;oe=6596926C\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:252px;height:auto\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tara and Davids daughter with donations at Heath Hospital.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>However, the ongoing cost-of-living crisis has meant that donations have reduced during 2023 while the amount of people in need of support has risen and that means Tara and David have been unable to help everyone that seeks their assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara has already had to say no to 15 people in the build-up to Christmas, including five in just one morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe simply do not have any resources or any food in the food bank here to donate,&#8221; Tara explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara and David fund \u2018All Year Round\u2019 partly with their own money but also depend on donations from the kind-hearted local community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Last night one lady turned up and dropped off five bags of toys as a donation and I was absolutely gobsmacked,\u201d said Tara.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff resident Lynne Calliste completed a sponsored silence for \u2018All Year Round\u2019 and raised enough money for a batch of presents which will be donated to families in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mother-of-four, also from Cardiff, who sought help from Tara and David, highlighted her experience with \u2018All Year Round.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTara was running around helping me and my children when I arrived in Cardiff, helping with links to accommodation and many more things,&#8221; she said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be where I am now if I hadn\u2019t met her and other kind souls.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the generous donations from people across the city, there are still families in need who Tara and David haven&#8217;t been able to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara describes one struggling family who have been taken out of their home and put into a hotel, due to a shortage of alternative temporary housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The mum does everything she can for her kids even if that means she suffers,&#8221; Tara said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They do not have the facilities to cook lunch for themselves. An Office for National Statistics (ONS) report found that four in 10 adults are struggling to pay their energy bills, reflecting the increased stress on people\u2019s budgets across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing costs in Cardiff are also on the rise, adding to the difficulty faced by many families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the average house price in Wales as a whole decreased by 2.7% between September 2022 and September 2023, the average house price in Cardiff increased by 2.5%. This is in line with the increasing rent prices in the city, and demonstrates the strain felt by Cardiffians struggling to get by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, six out of 10 adults in the UK are spending less on non-essential goods, and four in 10 are spending less on essential goods, such as food. Many are left with no option but to use food banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these costs are rising faster than wages, heavily contributing to the heightened reliance on food banks for people in Cardiff and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing cost-of-living crisis is hitting working-class families the hardest. That&#8217;s why the work of Tara and David, as well as the other food banks and charitable organisations around the country, is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyone who is struggling and anyone who needs help, if we can help in anyway, please message us,\u201d said Tara. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople find it embarrassing but don\u2019t be ashamed to ask for help.
