{"id":8210,"date":"2016-01-19T17:08:11","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T17:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=8210"},"modified":"2016-01-19T17:08:11","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T17:08:11","slug":"historic-doctor-church-may-saved-homes-elderly-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2016\/01\/19\/historic-doctor-church-may-saved-homes-elderly-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Doctor Who church may be saved by homes for elderly plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A HISTORIC church in Cardiff, earmarked for closure next month, could be saved as a place of worship as part of a social housing project.<br \/>\nSt Paul&#8217;s Church on Paget Street, Grangetown, which once featured in Doctor Who, has been on the market for eight years because it can no longer afford\u00a0the \u00a31.3 million annual maintenance costs.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/church.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8216 \" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/church-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Paul's Church, Grangetown\" width=\"335\" height=\"447\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8216 \" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/church-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Paul's Church, Grangetown\" width=\"335\" height=\"447\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>St Paul&#8217;s Church, Grangetown<\/strong><br \/>\nNow Wales and West Housing\u00a0wants\u00a0to buy and renovate the building, turning part of it into homes for the elderly and disabled but keeping the congregational area for worship.<br \/>\nThe church is\u00a0a Grade II listed building, which protects many of its historic features, making it\u00a0difficult to sell for development.<br \/>\nClare Barton, spokeswoman for\u00a0Wales and West Housing, of Alexandra Gate, said: \u201cWales and West Housing is working closely with the church in Wales and the parish on a planning application that will hopefully enable a scheme that delivers much-needed affordable housing for the area, while retaining part of the church building for worship and community use.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe planning process could take a few months. But if the Cardiff council approves the project\u00a0the re-vamped church \u00a0could reopen next year on its 126<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.<br \/>\nShe said: \u201cIt is early days. We are still discussing the plan and of course we still need approval for it to happen.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Rev\u00a0David Thomas thinks the plan could work and is happy that the housing association offer could save a well-loved building.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8213\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/David1-244x300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8213 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/David1-244x300-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"David1-244x300\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8213 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/David1-244x300-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"David1-244x300\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>David Thomas, vicar of St Paul&#8217;s<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nRev\u00a0Thomas, of Llanmaes Street, said: &#8220;We are very excited about the proposals because it means that the church can continue to be a place of Christian worship, as well as providing housing for some of the most vulnerable in the community.<br \/>\n&#8220;The church and the surrounding land were on the market for some years until this suggestion came our way a year or two ago, all being well this will be a wonderful compromise.&#8221;<br \/>\nCouncillor Chris Lomax said: &#8220;St Paul&#8217;s was built 125 years ago and needs a great deal of work for it to continue in its present form. Because of falling congregation numbers it was decided to put the building up for sale and build a modern church alongside the old one.<br \/>\n&#8220;Wales and Welsh Housing Association got permission from Cadw to put windows in at a lower level in the part of the church where the congregation sat so the sanctuary would be created into a smaller church.\u201d<br \/>\nCadw, the Welsh historical sites authority, supports the idea as a way of sustaining a part of Cardiff\u2019s heritage.<br \/>\nCoun. Lomax said: &#8220;I think this is a great idea, St Paul&#8217;s will be brought back into use in the community providing shelter for the aged and the vulnerable and retaining the church all being on a smaller scale.&#8221;<br \/>\nWhile the church undergoes renovation, members of the public will be able to use the church hall as a place of worship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A HISTORIC church in Cardiff, earmarked for closure next month, could be saved as a place of worship as part of a social housing project.
