Credit: Lahmacun.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alis\u2019 story and the Global Eats project&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alis Cartagena is catering manager at Global Eats and first came to the UK from Honduras five years ago to seek asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His mum signed him up to volunteer in the kitchen at Oasis when they arrived because he was a chef in Honduras. Volunteers gain experience while waiting for their asylum claim to be decided.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they have the right to work they can sometimes take up paid employment at Global Eats, like Mr Cartagena.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/top-10-facts-about-refugees-and-people-seeking-asylum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Refugee Council<\/a>, it can be hard for refugees to find work because, typically, they are only given five years leave to remain at one time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People caught in the asylum backlog also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/top-10-facts-about-refugees-and-people-seeking-asylum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose any work based skills<\/a> they arrived with. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/statistics-relating-to-the-illegal-migration-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The current asylum backlog<\/a>, as of December 2023, is 98,599.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lucas and Lahmacun\u2019s story&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucas Wootten set up Lahmacun three years ago with his wife Sophie, whose father is from Damascus. Credit: Lahmacun<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He had also wanted to do an entirely vegan\/vegetarian menu for a while, which is well-suited to Arabic cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The money raised by the supper club and Global Eats\u2019 other ventures, a food truck and private catering, goes back into supporting Oasis\u2019 work with refugees and asylum seekers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat it all comes back to is raising money and funds so we can keep doing what we are doing,\u201d said Ms Watson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oasiscardiff.org\/what-we-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oasis runs several different services<\/a> including providing a hot meal every lunch and helping with the asylum process. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oasiscardiff.org\/the-difference-we-make\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In 2022<\/a> it distributed over 27,000 plates of food and gave legal advice to 440 people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Watson said the supper clubs started in 2019 and takeaway ones were incredibly popular during lockdown, regularly receiving over 100 orders.&nbsp;The clubs stopped at the end of 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had to put our focus into other things but because of community interest and people like Lucas wanting to partner with us we started again,\u201d said Ms Watson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The three course dinner showcased food and flavours from Syria and the Levant<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1036,"featured_media":83512,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,79],"tags":[8706,8705,8707,303,1289,5001],"coauthors":[8526],"class_list":["post-83508","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-splott","tag-arabic-food","tag-lahmacun","tag-lucas-wootten","tag-oasis","tag-refugees","tag-supper-club"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
