{"id":83869,"date":"2024-03-05T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=83869"},"modified":"2024-03-05T15:28:02","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T15:28:02","slug":"why-luke-rv-moved-to-cardiff-to-kickstart-his-rap-dream-and-may-have-to-leave-to-achieve-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2024\/03\/05\/why-luke-rv-moved-to-cardiff-to-kickstart-his-rap-dream-and-may-have-to-leave-to-achieve-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Luke RV moved to Cardiff to kickstart his rap dream &#8211; and may have to leave to achieve it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Neath-born rapper has just released his latest long-player \u2018Are We There Yet?\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RAPPER Luke RV celebrates the release of his latest album with his first headline show in Cardiff this month but he already has his eyes on the next big step.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke, 28, calls the headline show at Clwb Ifor Bach on March 29 his \u201cbiggest moment so far\u201d and marks the release of his \u201cmost fleshed out\u201d work &#8211; the nine-track \u2018Are We There Yet?\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019m making the best music I ever have,\u201d said Luke, who works in the care industry by day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the music is an authentic, relatable, South Walian experience. It\u2019s quite honest and vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album features the singles \u2018Hole in One\u2019 &#8211; which has racked up nearly 40,000 views on YouTube &#8211; and \u2018Driver\u2019s Seat\u2019, on which Luke RV seamlessly transitions between a melodic chorus and a smooth rapping flow for his verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On &#8216;Driver&#8217;s Seat&#8217; he teams up with fellow Welsh artist JUICE MENACE and he sees being part of the Cardiff scene as key to his development as a rapper. Being from a small town like Neath, everyone has a lot to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Neath, most people listen to house music or bands. Not many people really listened to what I was listening to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke remembers travelling to Cardiff one evening to watch a Welsh rap event at the now demolished Gwdih\u0175 and being blown away that those on stage were rapping in a Welsh accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came up on my own and slept in my car under a bridge around the corner from the venue. I was just buzzing to meet people who liked the same music as me,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t get over the fact that people were rapping in Welsh accents in Cardiff. I was like, I need to move up here and start doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after that night, Luke started to go to a studio in Newport where he would begin recording music and says he \u201cfell in love with it and never stopped\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He released his first single \u2018Lost\u2019, in 2018. The first line of the single showcases the vulnerability which has become a feature of Luke\u2019s music, as he raps &#8221; feel lost, and I need you to find me&#8221; over a piano-based instrumental with an old school hip hop sounding beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Lost&#8217; was followed up by Luke\u2019s debut EP, \u2018Purgatory\u2019, later that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"LUKE RV - Driver&#039;s Seat (feat. He sees \u2018Are We There Yet?\u2019 as the latest addition to a series which tell the story of his growth as an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first project was called \u2018Going Nowhere\u2019 and that was about me feeling like I was doing so much work but feeling like I\u2019m still in the same place\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI called the next one \u2018WHAT\u2019S THAT, over there\u2019 which was a bit more hopeful after I\u2019d had some success as a rapper. This latest one is me motivating myself to keep going, because I feel like I\u2019m nearly there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke moved to Cardiff, the home of Welsh rappers such as Mace the Great and Local, to further his career a few years after he started rapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Living in Cardiff has given Luke opportunities to work with other artists and perform at bigger shows. Last year, he opened up for London rapper Bawo in Clwb Ifor Bach on his UK tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Luke grew up in Neath but moved to Cardiff to pursue a rap career<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Luke believes to take his career to the next step he may have to move to London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGetting to play at the Bawo show was a great night for me but it\u2019s difficult to grow a fanbase if you\u2019re based in Wales,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to get your songs played on BBC Radio Wales as a rapper and it\u2019s basically impossible to have your song put on one of their playlists, which is really how you increase your music\u2019s exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also hard to play big shows in Wales because a lot of artists on tour won\u2019t even come to Wales, they\u2019ll go to Bristol and then have MCs from there as their support acts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke believes that if the next generation of Welsh rap and hip hop artists are going to thrive in their own country, they need to be given more opportunities for airplay and gigs, which other genres may take for granted.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMyself, and artists like Mace the Great, have managed to put on headline shows but we need to see more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Following the headline show at Clwb Ifor Bach on March 29, Luke is planning a tour in
