{"id":8531,"date":"2016-02-02T16:29:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T16:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=8531"},"modified":"2016-02-02T16:29:56","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T16:29:56","slug":"barry-secondary-schools-need-more-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2016\/02\/02\/barry-secondary-schools-need-more-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry secondary schools need more support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BARRY secondary schools are struggling to meet Welsh Government standards.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333\">According to the National School Categorisation report published last Thursday, there is a contrast in performance between primary and secondary schools in Barry.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333\">Out of 20 schools in the area, 12 primaries have been labelled effective, whereas only one secondary, Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, was categorised in the top band.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8540\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Huw-Lewis.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8540\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8540\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Huw-Lewis.jpg\" alt=\"The Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis, pioneered the National Schools Categorisation System\" width=\"200\" height=\"270\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8540\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Huw-Lewis.jpg\" alt=\"The Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis, pioneered the National Schools Categorisation System\" width=\"200\" height=\"270\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis, pioneered the National Schools Categorisation System.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe three remaining secondary schools, Bryn Hafren Comprehensive, St Richard Gwyn Catholic High and Barry Comprehensive have all been placed in the bottom two categories, suggesting they are in need of outside support and improvement.<br \/>\nThe National School Categorisation System separates primary and secondary schools into four colour-coded bands: green (highly effective schools), yellow (effective schools), amber (needing improvement) and red (in need of the greatest improvement).<br \/>\nCategories are determined by a range of factors, including performance data, school self-evaluation, quality of leadership and the school&#8217;s wider capacity to improve.<br \/>\nWelsh Education Minister, Huw Lewis, said:\u00a0\u201cWe introduced our National Schools Categorisation system to help us identify those schools in need of most support and so we could assess schools on their performance and ability to improve.<br \/>\n\u201cThe system helps us to identify schools needing the most support and guidance, those doing well that could be doing better, and those that are highly effective and can help others improve.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Tyrone Davies, Headteacher of Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School, is not disheartened at his school&#8217;s banding in the amber support category.<br \/>\nHe said: &#8220;I am pleased that our categorisation recognises two things. Firstly that we will be able to access support in areas where we are weaker and secondly that we are making progress in these areas.<br \/>\n&#8220;We have been asked to improve attendance and results in Mathematics at Key Stage 4. Already this year progress has been made in these areas, which puts us on course for our best results ever this summer.<br \/>\n&#8220;When added to our best ever English and Science results last summer, this school would hope to prove itself worthy of achieving the Yellow Category next year.&#8221;<br \/>\nBarry Comprehensive School has been banded in the red support category for the second year running. It is one of two schools in the Vale of Glamorgan to be banded in the red group, alongside Eagleswell Primary School in Llantwit Major.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8534\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Barry-comp-for-web.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8534\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8534\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Barry-comp-for-web.jpg\" alt=\"Barry Comprehensive School has been placed in the red support category for the second year running\" width=\"740\" height=\"363\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8534\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Barry-comp-for-web.jpg\" alt=\"Barry Comprehensive School has been placed in the red support category for the second year running\" width=\"740\" height=\"363\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Barry Comprehensive School has been placed in the red support category for the second year running.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe school has declined to comment about this, as has\u00a0Vale of Glamorgan Councillor Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children\u2019s Services and Schools.<br \/>\nOn January 11, the Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet approved \u00a3900,000 in funding towards a range of interior and exterior works at Barry Comprehensive school.<br \/>\nThe money will go towards improvements in the pupils&#8217; toilets, the main reception and the car parks, with the aim of providing the best possible learning environment for the pupils.<br \/>\n<strong>Find out how your school performed on the interactive map below.
