{"id":86904,"date":"2024-11-05T16:38:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T16:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=86904"},"modified":"2024-11-06T18:01:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T18:01:30","slug":"residents-unhappy-with-canton-junction-that-is-a-nightmare-for-pedestrians-and-cyclists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2024\/11\/05\/residents-unhappy-with-canton-junction-that-is-a-nightmare-for-pedestrians-and-cyclists\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents unhappy with Canton junction that is a &#8216;nightmare&#8217; for pedestrians and cyclists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;<strong><strong>Council needs to make solving the safety issues a priority<\/strong><\/strong>&#8216;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>PEDESTRIANS and cyclists have described a \u201cnightmare\u201d junction as the \u201cmost dangerous\u201d in Canton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The busy intersection connects Leckwith Road, Wellington Street, Atlas Road and Kitchener Road &#8211; major routes that connect Canton to the city centre and other parts of Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But residents say only two of the five recognized crossing areas having pedestrian traffic lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also believe the junction is unfit for cyclists because it features a dangerous \u201cpop-up\u201d cycle lane that ends abruptly, leaving riders on the wrong side of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council has confirmed that action will be taken to make the cycle lane permanent but no date has been given. Now residents are calling on the council to make it a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intersection, close to Kitchener Primary School, Fitzalan High School and Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch is a busy pedestrian route all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Following the correct pedestrian route means a five-minute round trip. No green man means you\u2019re taking a huge risk when crossing,\u201d said Leckwith Road resident Aidan O\u2019Callaghan, 49.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery morning from 8am until 10 to 9am, hundreds of kids are walking down the road \u2013 it can get quite dangerous,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" O\u2019Callaghan stressed that it is not just on schooldays that the problems arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSundays and football days are the worst, it\u2019s chaos,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canton Councillor Stephen Cunnah has called for a \u201ccomplete overhaul of the junction\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see it as the most dangerous junction in Canton \u2013 change is long overdue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParents don\u2019t see their kids walking or cycling to school as an option,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canton resident Bernadette Collins says her children, who are now in their 40s, had to navigate the junction when they were at school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen they were younger, I always told them to be careful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to be careful at what stage they are allowed to be on the junction by themselves,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" Stephen Cunnah, Ms Collins and Mr O\u2019Callaghan agree that creating more recognised pedestrian crossings would be the first step to improving road safety on the junction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Collins, who uses a walking aid to get around and suffers with hearing difficulties, was also frustrated by the lack of time that pedestrians are given to cross at the two recognised crossing spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet us get across the crossings \u2013 slow the lights down, I\u2019m disabled,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has always been a problem, and I\u2019ve lived here for 40 years,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Cunnah said the junction should be fixed to a similar design standard as seen on Cathays Terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way they treated the junctions (on Cathays Terrace) is 10 times better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council said: \u201cThere are plans to improve crossing facilities at the junction, which will be delivered as part a future cycleway scheme, subject to funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No timeframe was given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temporary cycle lane on Wellington Road is also a source of frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temporary two-way lane was installed on the understanding it would be made permanent. Four years later, the temporary &#8220;pop-up&#8221; pillars are still in place and the safety issues remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt ends very abruptly leaving cyclists to enter Leckwith Road facing oncoming traffic,\u201d said Coun Cunnah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr O\u2019Callaghan, who uses the lane regularly, said to avoid exiting the junction dangerously many cyclists decide to cut-in onto the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He thinks an extension of the cycle lane onto Leckwith Road, which has been proposed by Coun.
