Yet many then struggle to navigate the health care system after this initial stage.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8817\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4792.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8817\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8817\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4792-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Oasis Cardiff, Splott.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8817\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4792-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Oasis Cardiff, Splott.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>Oasis Cardiff, Splott.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nOasis Cardiff, a Splott-based centre for asylum seekers and refugees, has various support systems available to help.<br \/>\nThe centre encourages people to register with a local GP and works to combat the difficulties of gaining health care for many of their vulnerable visitors.<br \/>\nLast week Oasis launched a new Befriending Scheme, which trains 10 women to help 10 female asylum seekers and refugees in their day-to-day lives.<br \/>\nReynette Roberts, co-founder of Oasis, said asylum seekers and refugees encounter health care problems due to confusion about processes or fear of getting into trouble of some kind.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople do not necessarily understand the appointments system or the medication given. Sometimes they might call 999 for non-emergencies such as a sore tooth,\u201d said Mrs Roberts.<br \/>\nIn November 2015 Oasis began supplementing their daily language classes with twice-weekly classes exclusively for women. The number of women learning English has since doubled to more than 20.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8816\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4791.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8816\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8816\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4791-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Socialising at Oasis Cardiff.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8816\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4791-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Socialising at Oasis Cardiff.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>Socialising at Oasis Cardiff.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nWithin these classes asylum seekers and refugees learn how to hold conversations with doctors, among other useful life lessons.<br \/>\nThe centre\u2019s staff includes a Syrian refugee doctor, Hussam, and a trustee who works as a GP.<br \/>\nAs for the issue of mental health, Mrs Roberts believes that services are limited in Cardiff: \u201cThere is a year\u2019s waiting list for counselling.<br \/>\n\u201cAn Eritrean man recently said to me: \u2018What is depression? We don\u2019t have a word for that.\u2019 A lot of people wouldn\u2019t understand their own symptoms.<br \/>\n\u201cThey might struggle to sleep and have post-traumatic stress\u00a0disorder but not realise it is depression.\u201d<br \/>\nSexual health care is an area that Oasis visitors may access more easily.<br \/>\nThe Terrence Higgins Trust holds rapid tests for HIV at Oasis around four times a year. A HIV Fast Test service is also open to all on Tuesday evenings at its clinic on Churchill Way in central Cardiff.<br \/>\nThe Trust\u2019s Support Services and Advice Manager, Sarah Fuhrmann, said: \u201cWe do target BME groups as they tend to be less likely to access our services \u2013\u00a0perhaps due to stigma in communities or dynamics in relationships.<br \/>\n\u201cAll our clinical services are unfunded so we prioritise HIV testing, but we identify someone if they won\u2019t go on to have further tests due to a chaotic lifestyle or vulnerability.<br \/>\n\u201cFor those who are living with HIV, we offer one-on-one counselling without a waiting list if people qualify for this service.\u201d<br \/>\nCardiff and Vale University Health Board are refusing to respond to inquiries from The Cardiffian.<br \/>\nClick\u00a0to find out more about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasiscardiff.org\">Oasis Cardiff<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tht.org.uk\">Terrence Higgins Trust<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE\u00a0National Health Service has held a prime position in headlines recently \u2013\u00a0but rarely is there mention of those such as\u00a0asylum seekers and refugees who can be excluded from the most basic health care.
