{"id":89476,"date":"2024-12-14T16:05:09","date_gmt":"2024-12-14T16:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=89476"},"modified":"2024-12-14T16:41:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T16:41:44","slug":"get-in-that-car-and-youre-dead-grassroots-football-referees-share-tales-of-threats-and-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2024\/12\/14\/get-in-that-car-and-youre-dead-grassroots-football-referees-share-tales-of-threats-and-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Get in that car and you\u2019re dead\u2019: Grassroots football referees share tales of threats and abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More support is needed to help the new generation of match officials with a worsening problem<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>GRASSROOTS football referees in Cardiff have spoken out about the \u201chorrendous\u201d abuse they receive, from thuggish threats to physical assaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Referees Society, which has 76 members, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CardiffReferees\/status\/1851312376869511514\">boycotted<\/a> a weekend of matches in November after several matches were abandoned and a referee was allegedly assaulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, several refs have stepped forward to share their experiences, and their views on what could be done to improve behaviour and support the next generation of match officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Which one&#8217;s your car? I&#8217;ll slash all the tyres\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One in four match officials has experienced physical abuse with 88% reporting verbal abuse, according to a  <a href=\"https:\/\/faw.cymru\/news\/faw-report-referees-in-wales-are-leaving-the-game-due-to-receiving-abuse\/\">survey<\/a> of 282 match officials by the Football Association of Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Smart, 57, has been refereeing in Cardiff for 20 years. But he says he still gets threatened every couple of months, and thinks behaviour on the pitch is the worst it\u2019s ever been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve sent a fella off in the past and he hit the card out of my hands. I\u2019ve been pushed and called every name under the sun and heard &#8216;Which one\u2019s your car? I\u2019ll slash all the tyres\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople threaten you, your family, your friends. Even saying \u2018I know your son, I\u2019ll sort him out\u2019 or \u2018I know your missus\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One incident left him particularly shaken. \u201cOne fella, three or four years ago, came head to head with me and said \u2018Look, I\u2019m gonna kill you\u2019. And if it wasn\u2019t for his manager grabbing him, he was running to have me, saying he was going to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most threats are made in the heat of the moment, and Mr Smart says the vast majority of players are \u201call mouth\u201d. But even for a seasoned referee with a thick skin, they can take their toll psychologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes they know about where I live or what car I drive. You do get a good worry, but I don\u2019t tell my missus or kids what\u2019s happening. I don\u2019t want them opening the front door at night or having to look over their shoulder. It\u2019s not fair on them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018You\u2019re on your own\u2019<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Referee Lloyd Griffiths, 64, has been involved in the grassroots game in South Wales for over 20 years and is often sent to the more difficult games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says referees can feel vulnerable pitching up to a game by themselves, especially for matches that attract bigger crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re on your own, you\u2019ve got 100 people watching who are drunk. It\u2019s a tense, horrible atmosphere. Horrendous abuse no matter what decision you make. And you\u2019re stuck in the middle on your own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no back-up. You\u2019re in the dressing room on your own. Anyone can walk into that dressing room, the door\u2019s open. Credit: Rachel Fergusson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once, a couple of years ago, Mr Griffiths had to abandon a game half an hour in after it was clear the away team had been drinking. The team reacted badly and started to threaten him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey threatened to beat me up, saying they\u2019d smash my head in the car park &#8211; \u2018Get in that car and you\u2019re dead\u2019. Thankfully, the other team surrounded me and stopped a couple of players getting at me. They were running at me trying to start a fight, trying to beat me up. I was pretty shaken,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, he thought twice about carrying on. \u201cYou don\u2019t really need the money. Do I really want to do that for \u00a340, to get threatened about having my head kicked in and punched? But I just love football, I just love it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worsening behaviour<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAW report found that more than 50% of the referees surveyed felt behaviour towards them was getting worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Griffiths agrees there has been a deterioration in the last couple of years. He is particularly concerned about the increasing number of players and supporters he sees attending matches who appear to be on drugs &#8211; but that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of it is inexplicable. Everybody seems to be entitled now. It\u2019s everybody else\u2019s fault, except their own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Smart thinks that some of the poor behaviour is driven by what younger players are watching on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you watch a football match on television, they tell the referee to f*** off &#8211; and the kids just take it from that. Serious incidents do happen, but most games are problem free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his 21 years of refereeing, he\u2019s seen some aspects of players\u2019 behaviour improve dramatically, including the reduction of racist abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referees have also seen improvements in behaviour since the introduction of temporary dismissals, which allow them to send players off for a minimum of 10 minutes if they commit dissent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More support needed<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Fish says the current shortage of referees means that many grassroots games in Cardiff are being played without a qualified referee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruiting new referees is a challenge, and he estimates that about half of newly qualified referees drop out after their first season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catrin Asbrey has recently qualified. She says that aggressive behaviour by those on the sidelines can have a big impact early on in a career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It can be quite disconcerting. He would like to see the FAW put more funding into initiatives like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do it all off our own backs. We\u2019re lucky we\u2019ve got three or four lads who will do it for nothing. But if referees get paid for that, there\u2019s an incentive,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Smart would also like the FAW to check in more frequently with referees, and to send officials to matches to help them understand the extent of abuse that grassroots referees can receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the FAW say<\/strong>?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAW said it had \u201cproactively met with the Cardiff Referees Association and the South Wales Football Association to provide support to match officials\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson said: \u201cThe PAWB REF campaign aims to tackle behaviour towards referees and includes the introduction of yellow arm bands for referees under the age of 18, tougher disciplinary sanctions for abuse towards referees and a highly successful Temporary Dismissals trial which saw dissent and abuse reduce by more than 30% across the trial leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMentoring of referees in Area Associations increased 45% from 2022\/23 to 2023\/24, while the Adran Leagues Referee Academy is dedicated to developing women and girls as match officials through mentoring. This has resulted in three times as many women and girl referees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South Wales Football Association were approached for comment but did not
