Six out of seven days a week there is something going on and that is what I love.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated in the heart of Splott on Sanquhar Street, The Cottage\u2019s red exterior makes it unmistakable &#8211; although in 2015 it was bright pink for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull is-light\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-white-background-color has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull is-light has-parallax\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#9a9295\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-89775 has-parallax\" style=\"background-position:50% 50%;background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/12\/cottage-through-the-years-1.jpg)\"><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior has all the hallmarks of a traditional pub, with pool and table tennis tables, a dartboard and televisions streaming sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s somewhere for people to meet up and chat about the community,&#8221; said co-partner Danny Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy favourite thing about the pub is the customers&#8217; characters. One gentleman, we are kind of his family. So, I don\u2019t wanna go on the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-partner at the pub, Dane Welsher and regular Rob Mitchell, aka &#8220;The Fish\u201d dispute this as they both have their paintings on the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cottage has a weekly poker league, pulling in over 30 people. The darts team, the Cottage Pies, play weekly too, home and away, and there is a skittles alley,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do Sunday lunches, but during the week we don\u2019t do food. We feed the darts teams when we are at home though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have open mics on a Thursday, karaoke on Fridays and the last Sunday of every month we have a live act,\u201d said Mr Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe love a good sing and stomping along. It\u2019s how most of our evenings here go,\u201d said customer Mr Gilbert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cottage is the last standing pub in Splott and it is also the oldest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many have closed in the last 20 years. This is when the pub closures accelerated hugely,\u201d said Dic Mortimer, a customer at The Cottage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of around 29 pubs and clubs that have existed over the years in the Splott and Adamsdown combined, only six are still open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cottage began as a hotel in 1870 and has been running as a pub for over 100 years, according Mr Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Welsher takes care of the licensing, and Mr Dod is the premises supervisor. Mr Welsher has been at The Cottage for nine years, with Mr Dod joined for the last three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Dod grew up in Lower Splott. Previously, he ran the Splotlands, in Adamsdown, and the Rompney Castle, in Rumney, before they both closed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Welsher is also born and bred in Splott and \u201cmakes an amazing Sunday dinner,\u201d according to staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are technically the last pub in Splott because the others are clubs,\u201d said Mr Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocean Park Brewers Fayre is technically a pub but most locals count it as more of a restaurant attached to the Premier Inn rather than a traditional neighbourhood pub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/YOJeJ\/10\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"625\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/YOJeJ\/10\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"625\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The green dots in the map symbolise the pubs that have closed;  the orange dots pubs that are still open. The map includes the Adamsdown area because it was part of the Splott ward until 1890. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The challenges of keeping The Cottage running<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;(Pub culture) started going downhill since they did the smoking ban, about 20 years ago. Since then, pubs have been dying a bit. People can sit at home and buy cans cheaper and smoke away,&#8221; said Mr Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drug culture pursued by some young people is also a challenge. \u201cA lot of youngsters now, make it worse, because they have no respect. They are scallywags,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cottage has been registered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiffldp.co.uk\/local-list\/\">Local Heritage List<\/a>, in an attempt by Cardiff Council to recognise historic assets and preserve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is harder to knock [the Cottage] down or build it into flats. You can\u2019t touch the fa\u00e7ade,\u201d said Mr Dod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not offer the same protection as buildings listed by Cadw, however. Consent is not required to alter or extend locally listed assets or change interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Updating the Local Heritage List came about because of a campaign from the Cardiff Civic Society and CAMRA, the real ale group, in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to the campaign, we have been able to lobby the council, to bring in the local listing of pubs. There is now more protection against pubs being demolished or being converted to flats,\u201d said Cari Williams, a spokesperson for Cardiff Civic Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are social animals, and they still have a need for connection. Pubs are a really important part of working-class life.
