{"id":89862,"date":"2024-12-17T12:21:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T12:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=89862"},"modified":"2024-12-17T12:21:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T12:21:32","slug":"pickleball-has-taken-over-the-world-now-its-taking-over-cardiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2024\/12\/17\/pickleball-has-taken-over-the-world-now-its-taking-over-cardiff\/","title":{"rendered":"Pickleball has taken over the world &#8211; now it&#8217;s taking over Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As the sport grows in Wales, so do the calls for it to be officially recognised<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THIS has been an amazing year for sport.\u00a0As the 2024 Paris Olympics took the world by storm, billions tuned in to see what the world\u2019s best athletes had to offer, and which sport would become their new obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one of sport\u2019s fastest growing communities spent the games asking one question: What about pickleball?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pickleball, described as a mix of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, was invented in Washington state in 1965, and was originally intended to be a children\u2019s game, before being adopted by adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has become America\u2019s fastest growing sport, with more than 13 million playing it in 2023, up five million from 2022, prompting calls for the sport to be officially recognised by the IOC, so that it can be played at the LA Olympics in 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrities the world over have picked up the paddle, with basketball legend LeBron James even investing in his own pickleball team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;We thought we&#8217;d have a go, and we became addicted&#8217;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The pickleball craze recently reached Cardiff, where it has grown rapidly. So, Kevin Costner style, I decided to build the club and see if people would come, and thankfully people did come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just started building the club up, we only really started up at the end of August, start of September,\u201d he tells me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club may be in its infancy, but it attracts a diverse crowd, with a mix of all abilities, ages, and skill levels present.\u00a0The community spirit among the group is palpable, with the competitive edge balanced nicely with the camaraderie you\u2019d normally see in team sports. Everyone is always smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This atmosphere is intentional \u201cYou get all sorts of different characters coming along when you have a club like this. In a way, that\u2019s the fun part.&#8221; says Jonah.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe try to find something for everyone to enjoy, and just encourage people to come along and have a good time for two hours on a Sunday morning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sport\u2019s spread isn\u2019t limited to Roath. I think the reason is because I got so addicted to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was complete happenstance how I came across pickleball. It was a sport I\u2019d never heard of it, it sounded funny, me and my friends thought we\u2019d have a go at it, and we became addicted,\u201d he tells me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;To be able to represent was one of the proudest moments of my life&#8217;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When we first spoke, Scott was deep in training for the European Championships, which took place in Southampton in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I caught up with him after the tournament during which Wales massively exceeded expectations, progressing to the quarter-finals in the over 50s category and picking up a handful of wins in the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a massive achievement to even compete, and to win and progress to the quarter finals, which we never expected to happen has been a really proud achievement for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an unbelievable experience. There are sports like arm wrestling that are recognised when we aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is optimism. \u201cI am confident that it will become a recognised sport. Maybe not in the next year, but definitely within five,&#8221; said Scott..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe positive news is that Pickleball Wales is going to be hosting a Welsh Open, which will be the first time a massive tournament like that will be held in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe already have enough registered players to be recognised, and it is something that we\u2019re trying to take seriously. We\u2019ve got people looking to grow the sport so I\u2019m confident we\u2019ll get there one day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to try pickleball for yourself, Roath Pickleball Club meets at 10am on Sunday mornings at Roath Pleasure Gardens, and the Llanishen club meets at 5pm on Thursday evenings at Llanishen Leisure
