{"id":90917,"date":"2025-01-28T17:13:51","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T17:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=90917"},"modified":"2025-02-03T14:44:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T14:44:14","slug":"the-thriving-cardiff-industry-you-wont-see-filming-on-the-citys-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2025\/01\/28\/the-thriving-cardiff-industry-you-wont-see-filming-on-the-citys-streets\/","title":{"rendered":"The thriving Cardiff industry you won\u2019t see filming on the city\u2019s streets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Its stars aren\u2019t real &#8211; they&#8217;re drawn by hand<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>CARDIFF may be the home of <em>Doctor Who<\/em>, but there\u2019s another side to its screen industry that isn\u2019t to be found filming around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a thriving scene and industry, animation certainly plays a role, though sometimes overlooked, in Cardiff\u2019s status as a leading destination for film and TV. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff is home to numerous animation studios, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Bumpybox\/?locale=en_GB\">Bumpybox <\/a>wich helped animate the film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo\u2019s <em>Kensuke\u2019s Kingdom<\/em>, which has recently been nominated for a BAFTA award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, despite their success, co-owner Sam Wright, who set up the studio after university, believes more needs to be done to promote Cardiff\u2019s flourishing animation scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFilms aren\u2019t just made in London, they\u2019re made locally,\u201d said Mr Wright, adding that people should be aware of Cardiff\u2019s animation industry \u201cas much as they are of Doctor Who\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason why Cardiff animation may be overlooked is that unlike Doctor Who, animation does not shut down large parts of the city for filming, generating massive media attention in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Rennie, managing director at another studio called <a href=\"https:\/\/clothcat.com\/\">Cloth Cat<\/a>, based above Cardiff Market, said: \u201cThe growth of the TV and film industry also brings with it famous people who appear in it who actually come to Wales. Photo credit: Cloth Cat <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to show that we\u2019re not only capable of making other people\u2019s work but actually funding and making our own.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wales has had animation hits before, such as <em>Fireman Sam<\/em> and <em>SuperTed,<\/em> but as Mr Rennie points out \u201cthat was 30 or 40 years ago and there\u2019s been a huge amount of animation produced in Wales since.&#8221; For him, good animation is something that can stay with people for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnimation is the story of your childhood and your happy times. People remember that, though they may grow up and move on and have lives. Things will be difficult; things will be good, but they\u2019ll remember the animation they loved to watch\u2026and they\u2019ll sit down at Christmas and watch Wallace and Gromit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at Bumpybox, Mr Wright agrees that there is a need for a new Welsh animated hit that can reach international audiences, while still promoting Wales in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHopefully we\u2019ll find our own Bluey or Peppa Pig, but it needs a lightning strike of investment for that to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the meantime, it\u2019s through events such as those run by Cardiff Animation Festival and Cardiff Animation Nights that animation is reaching audiences in Cardiff and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s the important thing about the festival is that it\u2019s there to promote animation as an art form and industry in Wales to people who may not have otherwise seen it,\u201d said Mr Rennie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With plenty of events on the horizon, animation in Cardiff isn\u2019t going away, even if it\u2019s often made behind closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qm6cXKDx2yY?si=CfBSv5CwgkRhG_dc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qm6cXKDx2yY?si=CfBSv5CwgkRhG_dc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cardiff Animation Festival will be hosting its annual festival in May at Cardiff\u2019s Chapter Arts Centre.
