{"id":92999,"date":"2025-02-14T14:33:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T14:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=92999"},"modified":"2025-02-14T22:01:54","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T22:01:54","slug":"a-little-red-heartbeat-at-the-centre-of-our-village-how-a-community-is-breathing-new-life-into-grade-ii-listed-phone-box","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2025\/02\/14\/a-little-red-heartbeat-at-the-centre-of-our-village-how-a-community-is-breathing-new-life-into-grade-ii-listed-phone-box\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A little red heartbeat at the centre of our village\u2019: How a community is breathing new life into Grade II-listed phone box"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Gwaelod-y -Garth residents raise nearly \u00a33,000 for a defibrillator to be installed inside iconic red box<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>VILLAGERS have raised thousands of pounds to breathe new life into an historic phone box by fitting a defibrillator inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Grade II-listed red kiosk in Gwaelod-y-Garth is among a number of underused payphones that have been put up for adoption by BT across Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Pearson, landlord of the Gwaelod Y Garth Inn, spearheaded the campaign to adopt the red box on Main Road and repurpose it for a rural village where ambulance response times can be critical.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"679\" height=\"999\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/02\/Picture2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93010\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"679\" height=\"999\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/02\/Picture2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93010\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Gwaelod-y-Garth&#8217;s red telephone box is in the process of being adopted and repurposed by the community<\/strong> Credit: The Cardiffian<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do have a defib here at the village hall, but it is a quarter of a mile away from where the inn is, and we found out that it had been broken for about three months,\u201d the landlord said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to have a backup &#8211; and there is this old telephone box in the village.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gwaelod-y-Garth\u2019s little red relic is a K6 kiosk, the model most associated with Britain\u2019s iconic phone boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The K6 was the sixth of eight models of phonebox introduced by the General Post Office between 1926 and 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was designed by British architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V. Some 60,000 were installed in 1936 &#8211; in Bermuda, Malta and Gibraltar, as well as in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadw, the Welsh Government&#8217;s historic environment service, granted Gwaelod-y-Garth\u2019s K6 kiosk Grade II status in 1991, recognising its historical significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BT says the phone &#8211; which still works &#8211; registered zero phone calls in the last 12 months. Cardiffian<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In September 2024 the inn began to raise funds for the defibrillator from their quiz night, and later set a crowdfunding target of \u00a31,000 set to cover the installation and running costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The efforts received significant boost in December when Peter Anning, who lives in the village, donated money from his Christmas \u2018bauble trail\u2019 using a QR code. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the community\u2019s response has exceeded all expectations, with more than \u00a31,800 raised on a JustGiving page alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<div provides the supplementary training. The cost of installing a defibrillator ranges from \u00a31,000 to \u00a31,800. It is hoped the work will be finished in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The library will continue for now, but the books may be relocated. &#8216;Librarian&#8217; Ms Allen MacNiven-Young believes that the historic kiosk&#8217;s latest change of role shows that, even if fashion has changed, it is still a vital part of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhone boxes are a clear reminder within the community of a focal point,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is still a little red heartbeat at the centre of our village.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit the
