{"id":9323,"date":"2016-02-26T14:16:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T14:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=9323"},"modified":"2016-02-26T14:16:15","modified_gmt":"2016-02-26T14:16:15","slug":"litter-pickers-clean-up-cardiff-rivers-in-toughest-challenge-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2016\/02\/26\/litter-pickers-clean-up-cardiff-rivers-in-toughest-challenge-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"Litter pickers clean up Cardiff rivers in toughest challenge yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PADDLING\u00a0pools, TVs, tractor tyres, and a table tennis table \u2013 these were just a few of the items retrieved on a litter pick by Cardiff Rivers Group.<br \/>\nThe woods near Trenchard Drive in Llanishen were cleaned up by a committed group of 18 volunteers who braved atrocious weather.<br \/>\nThe event turned out to be the toughest for the group since forming in 2009, as the area had not been fully cleared in five years.<br \/>\nTwo streams that flow into Roath Lake were also litter-picked as they were \u201cblighted by fly tipping\u201d.<br \/>\nThe woods between Trenchard Drive and the Crystals were particularly bad and rubbish was piled up on a steep bank and into one of the streams.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Cardiff-Rivers-Group-3-Chris-Hackett-.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9328\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9328 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Cardiff-Rivers-Group-3-Chris-Hackett-.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Hackett enjoyed the clean up despite the weather.\" width=\"450\" height=\"589\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9328 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Cardiff-Rivers-Group-3-Chris-Hackett-.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Hackett enjoyed the clean up despite the weather.\" width=\"450\" height=\"589\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Chris Hackett enjoyed the clean up despite the weather.<\/strong><br \/>\nGeneral waste around the area also contributed to a haul of rubbish that filled seven trucks.<br \/>\n\u201cThe rubbish collected was too much to count in terms of rubbish bags. It was a fantastic effort by the volunteers, and an excellent result from just two hours work,\u201d group member Nigel Barry said.<br \/>\nIt was a bumper haul for the group and the variety of items retrieved was the most bizarre they have ever seen.<br \/>\nCardiff Rivers Group aims to \u201cmake a difference\u201d and over the years they have certainly done that.<br \/>\nChris Hackett, a group committee member, said: \u201cMy favourite moment\u00a0was when we found a door with a number 13 that had been chucked and when we turned round, we could see that number 13 had a new uPVC front door.\u201d<br \/>\nCardiff Parks Service supported the event by supplying a vehicle to collect the rubbish and also disposing of the rubbish afterwards.<br \/>\n\u201cTheir support was key to the success of this event,\u201d Mr Barry said.<br \/>\nPhil Bale, Cardiff Council leader, and ward councillor for Llanishen, also turned up to help out.<br \/>\n\u201cPhil really got stuck in and wasn\u2019t put off by the filth. He was shocked with the sheer volume of rubbish and tweeted photos during the event.
