And will the ban add to the number of dogs needing adoption?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racing greyhounds typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greyhoundtrust.org.uk\/home-a-greyhound\/all-about-greyhounds\">retire<\/a> between the ages of three and five but can live until they are 15. So for over a decade, they need to be cared for somewhere else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is only one remaining greyhound racetrack in Wales &#8211; the Valley Stadium in Ystrad Mynach. A greyhound never sees another breed until they retire. There can be issues with them socialising with other breeds of dogs,&#8221; said Mr Havard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey need to socialise, they need enrichment activities, they literally need to learn how to play.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>A lot of greyhounds need caring through their trauma.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Essex Havard<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tragically, a lot of them need caring through their trauma. This has led to an <a href=\"https:\/\/gbgb-prod-assets.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/26104647\/GBGB-Track-Injury-and-Retirement-Data-2023-Commentary-FINAL.pdf\">increase<\/a> in the proportion of dogs being retained by their trainers or owners between 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;The number of dogs that have been discarded has increased&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since the pandemic, the animal welfare rescue sector as a whole has experienced a major crisis,&#8221; said Malcolm Eames, a trustee of GRW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While the number of greyhound tracks in the UK has decreased, they are running more dogs and more frequently. A greyhound&#8217;s racing careers finishes younger than it used to. The public perception might be that they are just fast dogs. But they all have very distinctive personalities,&#8221; said Ms Townend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, GRW secured new homes for 110 dogs.
