It has been almost a decade since Scotland made St Andrew\u2019s Day a public holiday, and it is time that Wales was given the same power.\u201d<br \/>\nSt David has been associated with Wales for over 700 years but it is not just countries\u00a0that have patron saints. Occupations, places, people and activities can all have their own patron.<br \/>\nTraditionally\u00a0it is the Pope who allocates\u00a0them\u00a0but groups are able to choose their own.<br \/>\nEveryone knows St David, George, Andrew and Valentine. But what about those patron saints you haven\u2019t heard of? St Drogo:\u00a0Patron Saint of the Physically Repulsive<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Day: April 16<\/em><br \/>\nNot the guy from Game of Thrones but a 12-century Flemish noble. After blaming himself for his mother&#8217;s death in childbirth he did some serious penance and 10 pilgrimages to Rome.<br \/>\nOn one pilgrimage he got a skin affliction that left him highly unpleasant to look on. He was thought so ugly that the people of his town built a cell for him to live in so they wouldn\u2019t have to look at him. He lived 40 more years in this cell eating only barley.<br \/>\nHe is also the patron saint of coffee shops.<br \/>\n<strong>2. St Barbara:\u00a0Patron Saint of Miners<\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9562\" style=\"width: 136px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/stbarbara.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9562\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9562\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/stbarbara.jpg\" alt=\"St Barbara is the patron saint of miners\" width=\"136\" height=\"268\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9562\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/stbarbara.jpg\" alt=\"St Barbara is the patron saint of miners\" width=\"136\" height=\"268\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>St Barbara is the patron saint of miners<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<em>Day: December 4<\/em><br \/>\nWe can\u2019t talk about\u00a0patron saints in Wales without looking at the sad (and possibly not entirely true) story of Barbara the patron saint of miners.<br \/>\nLiving in 267 AD she had a pagan father who kept her locked in a tower to keep her &#8220;preserved&#8221; from the outside world.<br \/>\nWhen she admitted to her dad she was Christian he tried to kill her but she managed to escape and hide with two shepherds. When one of them betrayed her to the authorities he was turned to stone and his sheep transformed into locusts.<br \/>\nDespite been tortured by the Romans for her Christian faith she stayed true to Christianity\u00a0and was eventually beheaded by her father. He was then killed by a lightning bolt from God for his crime. This was small comfort for Barbara who had died before the lightning struck.<br \/>\n<strong>3. St Fiacre:\u00a0Patron Saint of Taxi Drivers<\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9563\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9563\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/St-Ficare.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9563\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9563\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/St-Ficare-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Ficare is the patron saint of taxi drivers\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9563\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/St-Ficare-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Ficare is the patron saint of taxi drivers\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>St Fiacre is the patron saint of taxi drivers<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<em>Day: September 1<\/em><br \/>\nSt Fiacre was a 7<sup>th<\/sup> century Irishman who became famous for healing people with herbs. He was so good at this that people flocked to him from miles around and he built up lots of disciples.<br \/>\nUnfortunately he was a bit of a recluse and hated all the attention. He left Ireland and went to France to get some peace and quiet. When he got there he started a hospice in middle of a forest but made sure he had a separate area built so he could be alone.<br \/>\nFrom 1650 a hotel in Paris which was named after him started hiring out carriages. They became known as Fiacres and this became a general term for carriages. This has evolved into him becoming the patron saint of taxi drivers.<br \/>\n<strong>4. St. Margaret Clitherow:\u00a0Patron Saint of Businesswomen<\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9564\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Maragaret.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9564\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9564\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Maragaret-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Maragaret patron saint of business women\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9564\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Maragaret-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Maragaret patron saint of business women\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>St Margaret patron saint of businesswomen<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<em>Day: March 6<\/em><br \/>\nMargaret lived in England in 1555. She was born to Catholic parents and was described as very attractive and witty.<br \/>\nOnce she was married she\u00a0joined the Catholic Church and started hiding Catholic priests who were been persecuted. For this she was arrested by the protestant authorities and sentenced to be pressed to death.<br \/>\nShe was crushed under rocks but all while maintained her Catholic faith proclaiming\u00a0\u201cher spirit is rejoicing\u201d as he back broke.<br \/>\n<strong>5. St. Benedict: Patron Saint of Students.<\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9566\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9566\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/benedict.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9566\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9566\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/benedict-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Benedict is the patron saint of students\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9566\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/benedict-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"St Benedict is the patron saint of students\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>St Benedict is the patron saint of students<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<em>Day: July 11<\/em><br \/>\nBenedict was the son of a Roman senator who (ironically for the saint of students) was so appalled by the vice and debauchery in Rome he ran away to live as a hermit.<br \/>\nLegend says the devil visited him in the cave he was living in and tried to tempt him with the image of a beautiful woman.
