{"id":96514,"date":"2025-03-21T16:53:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T16:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=96514"},"modified":"2025-03-21T16:53:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T16:53:30","slug":"cash-is-no-longer-king-withdrawals-in-cardiff-drop-by-45-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2025\/03\/21\/cash-is-no-longer-king-withdrawals-in-cardiff-drop-by-45-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Cash is no longer king: Withdrawals in Cardiff drop by 45.5%"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But the decline is less marked in deprived areas, according to research by an ATM network<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THE number of cash withdrawals made by people in Cardiff has dropped by nearly half since 2019, but the decline has been slower in more deprived areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a decrease of over \u00a3210 million since 2019, from \u00a3687,000,000 to \u00a3477,000,000, according to new statistics from LINK, UK&#8217;s cash access and ATM network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nwgCv\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"473\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nwgCv\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"473\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am not a fan of the ATMs I probably use them once a year,&#8221; said Gwyn Chapple, 75, who was shopping in Cardiff city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was with Lloyds before, but this year they have shut so many branches across the UK. Sometimes the phone doesn&#8217;t work, or the trader doesn&#8217;t have internet, so it doesn&#8217;t always go through.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Wales is moving away from cash slower than many other areas of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/7GqOW\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"783\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/7GqOW\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"783\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare, as well as Blaenau Gwent and Rhymney are in the top 20 areas in the UK with the slowest declines in ATM
