{"id":97288,"date":"2025-03-28T15:01:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T15:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=97288"},"modified":"2025-03-28T15:05:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T15:05:20","slug":"ex-steelworker-who-still-lives-in-house-where-he-was-born-is-adamsdowns-resident-historian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2025\/03\/28\/ex-steelworker-who-still-lives-in-house-where-he-was-born-is-adamsdowns-resident-historian\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-steelworker who still lives in house where he was born is Adamsdown&#8217;s resident historian"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">John Sennett, 77,  was born in 1948 and though he has travelled he always came back home <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>JOHN Sennett can\u2019t imagine living anywhere else.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former steelworker, 77, was born and bred in Adamsdown and still lives in the house in which he was born in on Eclipse Street. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using his rare perspective of being a genuinely life-long resident of the suburb, Mr Sennett has spent the past 20 years collecting knowledge and stories from the area where he grew up in the &#8217;40s and &#8217;50s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in 1948, Mr Sennett attended Tredegarville School which he left in 1962. I delved into the history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I started to research different places, from Adamsdown Cemetery to the Royal Infirmary. Sennett researched and created his own documents and then had them printed  as booklets, detailing Adamsdown\u2019s history as far back as 1880.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He proudly says his research helped to inform the much-loved Cardiff Yesterday books, a 36-volume series written by fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/obituaries\/stewart-williams-noted-publisher-whose-books-brought-the-history-of-cardiff-to-life-2217081.html\">local historian Stewart of local help he is able to give Adamsdown residents to help them connect with their past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I noticed this photo with the &#8216;Sun Street&#8217; sign one day, and I found out it was a person called Joanna Goddard in it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve found the guy who now owns it, and I&#8217;ve contacted him to see if he would be willing to give it to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My knowledge has&nbsp;helped a lot of people. A bull even escaped once,&#8221; Mr Sennett said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA cow once broke into a lady&#8217;s living room on System Street. It broke one of her banister rails. She&nbsp;had to get her door knocked down to get the cow out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thelma Mackie \u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p>Back in the &#8217;70s, some residents claimed to have seen crocodiles and even elephants in a resident&#8217;s garden. Mr Sennett says it isn&#8217;t just a tall tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was one person called Thelma Mackie who lived on\u00a0Constellation Street,&#8221; Mr Sennett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe used to have all sorts of animals in her house.
