It just doesn\u2019t feel like punishment is inevitable,&#8221; a 35-year-old tech manufacturer told us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I see an empty road, no pavements, no foot traffic, and I\u2019m driving at 20mph, putting my leg down on the pedal is not hard to do \u2013 it doesn\u2019t make me feel like I\u2019m doing anything dangerous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the goal is to stop people speeding, the punishment must be inevitable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2025\/03\/21\/motorist-fined-1014-for-going-6mph-over-the-20mph-speed-limit\/\">Enforcement begins at 24mph<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 45-year-old tradesman told us:&nbsp;\u201cFrom my experience of driving in Cardiff, most people drive in excess of 20mph, including myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have, on occasion, been behind someone driving at 20 mph on Hadfield Road, which is a road dissecting a commercial area, and it just seems positively daft going at that speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we need is a more targeted approach against bad and dangerous drivers: longer bans, bigger penalties etc\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cardiffian\u2019s findings contradict the official data supplied by GoSafe \u2013 the partnership between councils, government, and police \u2013 which operates Wales\u2019s speed cameras.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their data shows that 96% of drivers complied with 20mph speed limits between January 2024 and January 2025 in Mid and South Wales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GoSafe data was collected from visible roadside speed cameras, which means it is possible motorists slowed down when approaching the cameras.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/f3q0N\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/f3q0N\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked for comment, GoSafe said: \u201cSpeeding is one of the main contributory factors to collisions on our roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those caught speeding, just 0.7% were prosecuted. The rest undertook engagement sessions to ensure they understood the new speed limits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Gunter, a councillor for Butetown, said: \u201cWhilst Tyndall Street and Callaghan Square are main roads used to drive across the City this is also a very residential area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFamilies with young children walk to school, people walk to work at the offices here, students walk to the college and pedestrians cross these roads on their way into the City Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe speed limit quite rightly takes this into account.
