The event was organised in Cardiff to mark the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Unions, politicians from Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour, and groups including ‘Refugees Welcome Here’ joined the demonstration at City Hall on Sunday.
The protestors also raised their concerns over the proposal of illegal immigration bill by the Westminster government. The UK Government says that the bill will mean those who arrive in the UK illegally will be detained and then deported to their home country or a safe third country.
The protestors marched from City Hall to the Senedd. The demonstration also protested against UK government’s Rwanda policy.
Amarjite Singh, Wales TUC’s organizing and development officer who was a part of the protest, said, “The message is clear, that we want a safe passage for refugees to this country. We don’t want refugees and crime seekers coming by the boat either, but this government has to make sure there’s a safe passage.”
John Actie, one of the five men accuse of murdering 20-year-old Lynette White in Cardiff Bay, was one of the speakers at the demonstration. He said, “What’s happening out on the streets of Britain… the government don’t seem to care because they’re not interested in black people and Asians. They’re just not. As long as they’re not, they’re okay. Basically, it’s just out of control.”
