United Welsh Housing Association’s plans to build social housing on the land behind Plasturtwyn Terrace in Llanbradach have sparked huge concern from local residents.
Proposals say the development would be “high quality and sustainable” but people living in the area are worried it’ll affect road safety and cause parking issues.
They say the road between Plasturtwyn Terrace and Wingfield Crescent “can barely cope with traffic at the moment” and if more houses are built with only a single way in and out of the estate it would become “dangerous and illogical.”
Geraldine Raymond’s house backs onto the land. She says: “We’re not happy about it, we’re upset about it.
“We all feel that both the Council and United Welsh have at no time taken our views into consideration. We have a petition going, there are numerous names on this petition.”
Mrs Raymond, along with other residents, would like to see the piece of land transformed into a community garden.
But the developers, United Welsh, have justified their plans. In a statement they said: “There is already a waiting list of more than 7,000 people for high quality affordable homes in the Caerphilly County Borough Council area and the 30 homes that are being proposed for this site will help to meet that need.
“The plans seek to minimise the impact upon neighbouring properties.”
Plaid Cymru councillor for Llanbradach,Colin Mann says: “I have supported residents in their concern.
“There’s certainly an issue about access to the site and I share resident’s concerns about access.”
The Residents Committee will hold a meeting tonight to discuss their next steps.
Caerphilly Council have been approached for comment.
