A jersey worn by legendary Welsh rugby player Sir Gareth Edwards sold for a record breaking amount.
The shirt sold for £240,000 pounds at an auction in Penarth, comfortably beating the previous record of £180,000.
The scrum half famously wore the shirt while scoring what’s widely referred to as the greatest try of all time playing for the Barbarians against New Zealand in 1973.
It was sold as part of a collection of kit worn by Edwards as well as some of his greatest opponents including fellow nine Sid Going, who lined up opposite him that day, and former All Blacks captain Colin Meads.
The final total reached just under £350,000 .
Ben Rogers Jones was the valuer of the shirt at the Rogers Jones Auction House said it’s iconic history helped it reach such a figure.
Certainly, the jersey is more famous than the one we sold for £180,000. In terms of a sporting icon and a recognisable jersey, this would be the most famous.
Cliff Morgan’s commentary is also credited with immortalising the moment the Welshman charged down the left wing and grounded the ball.
The game itself went down in history, with Edwards’ efforts leading the way to a first ever win for the Ba-Bas against the All Blacks at Cardiff Arms Park.
The Welsh great said the profits will go to various charities as well as to his grandchildren.
