How many people in the UK are openly gay?

Amy and Hannah asked the public what percentage of the UK they think is LGBTQ+, and it seems that many are still closeted

We Voxpopped on the streets of Cardiff, asking young womxn what percentage of the UK population they thought identified as LGBTQ+. Here’s what they said…

Charlotte Oatley, 19, “Maybe 20 or 30%, quite high I reckon.”

Jessica Pearce, 19, “I’d say 35%, I agree quite a lot.”

Cerys Davies, 21, “I’d estimate at about 23%.”

Isobel Grant, 20, “I thought higher, I thought maybe about 50%.”

Natalie Sole, 25, “I was gonna say 10%.”

Shanine Morris, 24, “At least half. LGBTQ – that’s a lot of people!”

However, according to data published by the Office for National Statistics, in 2017, only two percent of the UK population identified as either lesbian, bisexual or gay!

When told this, Shanine said, “That’s just because that’s how many identified and actually wanted to say it. I guess I don’t reckon 50% would say that they’re out, but I reckon there is at least 50%. They used to say one in four back in the day.”

At Herkind, we want to build a community where more people feel comfortable and confident in identifying and expressing their sexuality, whether this be loud and proud or anonymously. By listening to our podcast ‘One gay, one guy’, and engaging with our platforms, you can join the trusted community. We want to edge towards a future where everyone feels comfortable identifying whichever way they feel suits them.

We talked all about coming out and what it means in our era in our first episode of One Gay, One Guy. You can find it on Spotify – let us know what you think!

Herkind is a safe space for young LGBTQ+ womxn to explore and enjoy their identity – otherwise known as your big sis’.
