Campaigners Fight to Save Hailey Park in Llandaff North

Welsh Water has postponed their plans to build a sewage pumping station in one of the city’s parks.

Cardiff Council has transferred Hailey Park in Llandaff North to Welsh Water without consultation to residents.

Welsh Water want to build a sewage pumping station underneath Hailey park at the Ty Mawr entrance to extend the waste network from Penarth to Llandaff North.

They announced the plan last year and they planned to start their work this month.

But residents said ‘NO’ to it with ‘Hand Off Hailey Park’ posters on their windows. They have been campaigning against the plan since it was announced.

Now Welsh Water has announced that they will not start the development until later this year due to the ‘bird nesting season’ and agreed to meet representatives from community groups.

Local residents say Hailey Park is the main park for them and they don’t want it to be changed.

Calie and Philippe Demougin live in Llandaff North. They walk their dog in the park every day. They say parks are getting smaller because of more urbanisation.

“We switched to here (Hailey Park) to walk, but now they are building here,” said Philippe. They have to find another place to walk their dog.

Next, they will continue to urge Cardiff Council to rethink their plan. Also, they will talk to Welsh Water to find alternative solution.

Welsh Water say they will carry on the original plan in September this year, but the local community say they will continue to try to stop the plan.
