Festival director: “Animation can be enjoyed by adults”
The UK’s only Japanese animation festival is coming to Cardiff at the end of the month.
The two-day Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival will open at ATRiuM Cinema on Friday 25 November, with a selection of Japanese and local short films, and continue at Chapter Arts Centre on the Saturday.
Animator and festival director Eiko Ishii Meredith says, “Western animation is very much just for kids. Japanese animation deals with much more gritty and realistic subject matter.”
The festival also includes animation and calligraphy workshops, a marketplace, raffle and the Welsh premier of Redline. Kotatsu is now in its second year and Eiko, who is currently working with director Tim Burton, hopes to make it an annual event.
