Vintage movie posters provide food for thought
Movie posters from the 50s are usually more silly than satirical, but Chapter Arts Centre’s new exhibition uses them in some dark and meaningful artwork.
The current ‘art in the bar’ display, by Robert Bermingham and Richard Robinson, takes vintage movie posters and strips away the images, leaving just bold, cheesy text declaring messages like “It will scare the pants off you! Invasion USA!” The stark contrast between style and message is both eye-catching and interesting.
Lauren Jury, visual arts assistant at Chapter, said, “It’s important to showcase local artists’ work as it can be difficult to get people into your studio to see it.” She also commented that Chapter likes to support up-and-coming talent, and the bar provides a good space to do so.
