AM supports ‘Keep your cool at Christmas’ campaign protecting workers
Vaughan Gething AM is urging Cardiff’s shoppers to ‘Keep their cool’ this Christmas as part of an Usdaw (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) campaign to protect shop-workers over the festive season.
Usdaw research shows that in 2010, 70% of shop-workers were verbally abused, particularly when they refused customers age-related items such as alcohol, and this increased significantly over the Christmas period.
Mike Corbett, Supervisor of the Spar store on Station Terrace, claims he regularly suffers verbal attacks from drunk customers with some of his colleagues suffering racial abuse.
Vaughan Gething AM says, “Retailers and their staff provide a tremendous service, especially in the run-up to Christmas when demand is very high and stores are busy. Shop-workers deserve respect and they have my full support.”
