Cardiff shops will donate bag charge money to support charities
91% of Cardiff shops will pass on the money collected by the mandatory bag charge to charity, a recent survey found.
Despite no legal obligation to do so, a survey found most retailers are passing on the proceeds to charity. The survey, carried out by Cardiff University’s Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society(BRASS), looked into how retailers have implemented the mandatory charge.
Lori Frater, research manager, was surprised how many companies were donating the money to charity. “The Welsh Government had only recommended that the charge should be passed on to good causes.” said Lori.
As many companies only have a few outlets in Wales, it is likely the carrier bag proceeds will be used by charities elsewhere in the UK.
