Perhaps best known as America’s pastime, the sport of baseball has a proud and celebrated history in Wales.
Unfortunately, the popular summer tradition has gradually faded away. “Baseball’s annual contest between Wales and England brought in a crowd of nearly twenty thousand spectators at Roath Park during the 1980’s”, according to Jason Cross of the Welsh Baseball Union.
Jason says the key issue surrounding baseball’s demise was the decision by both sports commissions and the lottery to cease funding for the sport, as they focused their attention on football and rugby across Wales.
However, there are still opportunities for people in Wales to get involved in baseball. Local clubs including Llanrumney and Grangetown run teams for both girls and boys catering for all ages. Get involved!
