The new online home delivery service provides a viable, local alternative to major supermarkets. It’s recently been named as one of The Independent’s top ten UK box schemes, demonstrating the importance of supporting Welsh producers and growers as more people become increasingly aware of where their food is sourced. Their fruit and vegetables are locally sourced and are organically grown to Soil Association Standards, giving the best of flavour and health benefits.

Founder Chris Rees discovered that buying local high quality farm produce was not always an easy thing to do. He said: “Many of us care where our food comes from and want to support local producers and growers, but we also like the convenience of shopping online.” The company ensures that people have access to great quality farm fresh Welsh food, while also reducing food miles, according to Chris.

While the Welsh Food Box Company attempts to make it easier for people to consume their recommended five a day a recent report by the chair of the Royal College of GPs suggested that this now seems unrealistic. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, two a day rather than five might be more realistic advice to give to families, says one of the UK’s leading doctors.

However, this trend is evident across Cardiff as the Penylan Pantry also take veg box orders. Melissa Bowthman, co- owner said: “We feel passionate about creating personalised veg boxes because we hate food waste.” They source their vegetables from the Riverside Markets (RCMA) to areas across Cardiff all by bicycle.
