Brains Brewery have decided to extend the #StrawsSuck campaign, with straws no longer being automatically given in 103 of their pubs
Brains say it’s the last straw for the practice of handing out straws with their beverages, after a successful trial run.
Straws Suck is an environmental campaign started by the Surfrider Foundation in an effort to reduce the amount of plastic breaking down in the world’s oceans.
In 2010 an estimated 12.7m tonnes of plastic waste entered the ocean.
The campaign is a global movement and many in the hospitality industry have joined promising to reduce their straw wastage. Brains joined with a trial run of eight pubs back in July this year.
PR and communications manager for Brains, Tim Lewis said: “Following a successful trial in a selection of our venues we have taken the decision to extend the scheme to all 103 of our managed pubs.”
Tim Lewis believes that this will be an important step in reducing the amount of plastic waste Brains produces each year.
Straws will still be available in some exceptions, Tim Lewis explains, “We understand some people may need to use a straw (e.g. small children or those with disabilities) and therefore a small number of straws will be available in each pub on request. Also in our specialist cocktail bar Barocco, a limited number of drinks will still be served with straws because of the size and shape of the glass they are served in.”
Plastic waste in the oceans breaks down and can be ingested by many animals causing them harm.
It is therefore no surprise that Brain’s choice to extend the campaign has been popular with its patrons. One customer at Brains managed pub the Three Horse Shoes, Jessica Williams, 32 from Cardiff said “That’s great news! Straws are so unnecessary and wasteful.”
Brains are just one of many chains calling time on use of straws as the #StrawsSuck movement sweeps the globe.
