Representatives from Pride will show small organisations that a good event doesn’t have to cost the earth
Volunteers from Pride Cymru will share the secrets of how they organised Wale’s largest Pride event, in a communications event for small businesses and charities.
The talk will be given by Hannah Granton, head of marketing and Megan Chick, PR and communications manager, both of whom joined Pride earlier this year.
It is aimed towards smaller organisations that don’t have large marketing budgets.
Hannah said that you don’t need to pour endless resources into marketing as long as your message is clear. Maintaining a strong brand in the face of limited resources or budget cuts will be a key focus of the talk.
Pride Cymru has faced considerable difficulties this year due to budget cuts. Their marketing budget was halved, from £40,000 to £20,000.
Hannah said that it was important to attract a lot of people to Pride events such as The Big Weekend, to ensure the LGBT+ community felt accounted for and also to enable the organisation to continue running sustainably.
She added that Pride Cymru receives little government support.
“We get a bit of a grant but it’s nothing compared to what other Prides get across the UK.”
Despite these issues, the 2018 Big Weekend event was a real triumph, with 50,000 people taking part in the three day celebrations.
Hannah felt an element of Pride’s success was the care taken in ensuring their brand was visually aligned with their message.
“One of the things I jumped on straight away with my work was making sure we looked like an LGBT event,” she explained.
The talk was arranged by CIPR Cymru Wales as part of a series of communications events called ‘Rise and Shine’.
It will take place on 22 November at the Bigmoose Coffee Co.
Bigmoose co-owner Chloe Smith said that they were happy to host events that would help other small businesses and charities find success.
