Cardiff Midwifery Society is raising funds for The Birth Partner Project, a charity that supports women going through pregnancy alone

Cardiff Midwifery Society (CMS) is hosting a pub quiz this month to raise funds and awareness for an important Cardiff-based charity.

The event takes place at 7pm on 28 November at the Travellers Rest in Caerphilly. Tickets are £4 and all proceeds will go to The Birth Partner Project (TBPP).

The society brings midwives in Cardiff together to celebrate and advocate for midwifery. It also organises socials, study days and activism events for passionate student midwives, said Nat Dibsdale, a CMS representative.

This year the society voted to support TBPP, a charity that supports vulnerable women and their families with volunteer birth and postnatal partners.

“We thought there was no better charity than one co-founded by one of our own student midwives: Laura Santana,” Nat continued.

TBBP helps vulnerable women such as those who may be seeking asylum, she explained, that do not have a local support network or the resources to pay for extra help during labour, birth and postnatally.

As many as one in five women have mental health problems in pregnancy or after birth. Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health problems in pregnancy, says the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Feeling unsupported could make the experience even more stressful than it needs to be for mothers. This could potentially affect birth outcomes, especially in terms of maternal mental health.

Nat concluded, “This cause is so close to our hearts as support and advocacy for women is at the very heart of midwifery and of the utmost importance in order to support the birth of not only healthy babies, but also strong and confident mothers.”

The event promises a fun night of food, drink and a brain teasing quiz plus the opportunity to raise much needed funds for a worthy cause.
