Local artists’ work is being shown across the front of Cardiff Central at night telling stories of Welsh traditions
A large light projection of Welsh artists’ work is being projected on the front of Cardiff Central train station until 5 January.
The work is part of the Light of Winter Trail, a free immersive activity guiding visitors around the city.
The projection, spread across the entire of the main entrance of Cardiff Central train station, runs between 14 November-5 January. It has been commissioned by FOR Cardiff, a not-for-profit organisation, and Christmas at Bute Park, a Cardiff Council event.
Stories of Welsh art, traditions and folklore are told through the project, including illustrations by four Welsh artists: Sahar Saki, Frank Duffy, Beth Blandford and Jack Skivens.
Jack Skivens, 37, from Pontypridd, an illustrative artist featured in the projection said the project was a slow process, beginning in August and being completed at the end of October.
Skivens said that he was proud to see his work and be featured with local artists.
“I think it’s great that it’s local artists and it’s found this new space to exhibit and get people to engage with local artists’ work.
“If I could tell six-year-old me, your artwork’s going to be up on the train station, it’s unbelievably exciting.”
Dafydd Rhys, chief executive for the Arts Council of Wales, an independent charity, said: “It’s vital to make the case for funding the arts sector in every way – for the joy the arts bring, the wellbeing the arts provide.”
Skivens said it was important to share local Welsh art on this kind of scale. He said: “It’s amazing to share that artwork with people who might not witness it.”
Skivens hoped that other artists would see the projection, saying: “I want them to go, ‘do you know what, look at that, there’s a space for that in Cardiff and I’m going to do a bit of that myself’.”
The illumination can be viewed outside of Cardiff Central train station between 5pm and midnight every night, until 5 January.
