The freegan community in Cardiff is a mix of squatters, students, the less affluent and anyone who disapproves with the thousands of tonnes of food that goes to waste every year.
With over 25 ‘dumpster diving’ locations, freegans reclaim and recycle food across the city. Steffan Jones, a freegan for three years, gets 95 per cent of his food supplies from Cardiff’s supermarket bins.
He said, “freegans can live really well, you can find pretty much anything in the right places at the right times and because of the weather [in Wales] the food keeps really well.”
Among Steffan’s best finds are a box of Linda McCartney burgers and for breakfast, a tropical fruit salad and a sultana bagel. Doesn’t sound bad to me!
