Les Misérables has been translated into a welsh language performance, Les Misérables: Fersiwn Ysgolion by the Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) for their ten year anniversary.
In association with Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Ysgol Glanaethwy and University of Wales Trinity Saint David the selection of 120 actors and actresses aged between 13 – 19 years old took place nationwide. WMC believe audiences will see future stars emerge from the musical. The next Anthony Hopkins, Ruth Jones or Rhys Ifans may be in Cardiff’s midst. Statistics Department, Welsh Government confirm, “There are 562,000 people in Wales who can speak Welsh, representing 19 per cent of the population.” That is a sizeable Welsh language community and talent pool to be utilised.
Likewise the French film Amélie tapped into a talent pool and saw global success.
