Sainsbury’s threaten Welsh Government with legal action
Major supermarket chain Sainsbury’s are threatening legal action against the Welsh Government after discovering that online supermarket Ocado do not have to charge their customers the newly introduced Welsh carrier bag tax.
In an e-mail exchange between Sainsbury’s and the Welsh Government, obtained through a Freedom of Information request submitted by the Western Mail, Sainsbury’s expressed their anger at Ocado’s exemption.
The Welsh Government maintains that it has not made Ocado exempt from the 5p bag charge but add, “We have however given a view that the bags Ocado use, based on the information provided by Ocado, are not currently subject to the charge as their purpose is not to enable the goods to be delivered, but are part of their automated packing system.”
