After a life of travelling the globe, Adam Holton is offering a new service which allows people to practice writing on old-fashioned manual typewriters
A local author and public typist has opened a stall in Cardiff market and is offering the chance to hire a manual typewriter and have a go at using it to write.
Adam Holton has started renting the stall and he will be offering a new service called typewriter- for-hire. This service allows the public to write whatever they wish on a manual typewriter for a cost of £1 for two minutes and a maximum of ten minutes.
Holton will provide the materials needed, explain how to use the typewriter, and give a brief demonstration before each session. Then, once the customer is settled, he will let them “crack on.”
He is open to adapting the service if it does not go to plan, but he aims to keep it as an end-of-day service between 4 and 5 pm and keep it running from now until Christmas.
The typewriter-for-hire service is a new idea that was born out of Holton’s desire to offer an opportunity for people to stop, think and reflect while they walk through the market and navigate a “very busy world.”
“I thought it be interesting to see if that was something people want,” he said.
Holton moved from Ceredigion to Cardiff with his partner and decided to set up in Cardiff market after a few “really good,” experiences writing short stories in the city centre.
Holton says he spoke to the market’s manager and arranged a rolling rent agreement for stall 30. He is unsure how long he will be staying in the market, and where this new venture takes him.
“I’m set up in here for the next couple of months, possibly even till March or so, and then after that, I’m going travelling again,” he said.
