The fate of an empty unit on Wellfield Road will be decided on 11 December at a planning committee meeting.

The unit has been vacant for a year and is proposed to become a fish and chip shop. This has caused a local feud between retailers along the street and the applicant who welcomes the fish shop.

Andy Ceshion, manager of neighbouring Seven Clothing, said, “We’ve organised a petition and have collected over 400 signatures against it.”

Farooq Khalid, the applicant, has also created a petition that has gathered a huge amount of support from the local student population.

The meeting will vote for or against the fish and chip shop along the retail dominated road, but a similar proposal was rejected nine months ago.
