Superchoir has taken both its Cardiff and South Wales Valleys choirs online during lockdown with the goal to boost morale and raise money for mental health charity SANE.

The non-audition choir’s rendition of Queen’s Thank God it’s Christmas will launch on the Superchoir Facebook page on 18 December (time TBC). The pre-recorded event will provide a link to a SANE Just Giving page.

Before lockdown the choirs were performing at events including the Tenovus Singathon in Cardiff Bay, and worked closely with charities like Martha’s Dancing Heart Appeal. The choirs have been singing on Zoom during lockdown, rehearsing three nights a week for the fundraiser.

A challenging year

Choir motivator Chloe Cooke has been working for Superchoir for five years, alongside singing and song-writing.

“Taking our choir online has been challenging,” she says. “We wanted to keep our members engaged; connection seemed more important than ever.”

Superchoir was established by team building organisation Inspire Me in 2010, who has run workplace choirs across South Wales for 10 years.

“We want to give people a space to be vibrant, and connect with others,” Chloe said. She says SANE was a perfect fit for the fundraiser as it resonates with Superchoir’s ethos.

Established in 1986, SANE’s goal is to raise mental health awareness and combat stigma.

Superchoir’s online sessions have enabled people as far as Germany to take part in the Christmas fundraiser.

Jackie McDonald from Kent joined Superchoir online in September and describes it in one word as “joyous”. Jackie has been working from home for her local authority and says, “I have been so grateful for Superchoir during lockdown, it takes you out of yourself for a few hours.”

Chloe says Superchoir will continue to do virtual fundraisers in 2021. “We will encourage people to sing loudly and proudly,” she says, “we want to make people feel good and support SANE.”
