At the heart of the Nintendo South Wales Championships, stories of personal connections and evolving family traditions emerge.
Gamers from across Cardiff convened to celebrate a revered game console: Nintendo. The event, marked by enthusiasm and a shared passion for gaming, saw participants engaging in some of Nintendo’s most beloved games.
The Nintendo South Wales Club hosted this event, named the Nintendo South Wales Championships. There were 16 participants in this competition.
“My loyalty to Nintendo may be partly due to nostalgia. I can never forget the first gaming console my father gifted me as a child,” said Sarah, one of the event’s organizers, “I used to avoid social interactions, but my gaming console was my childhood companion.”
Nintendo, established in the late 19th century, initially produced playing cards. In the 1980s, the company launched its first gaming console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which revitalised the video game industry. With iconic games like ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘The Legend of Zelda,’ Nintendo set a new standard for interactive gaming, cementing its status as a key player in the global gaming market.
Gamers like David, who was competing in the event, now share his love of the machine with his young children. “Nintendo games focus on involving the entire family,” he said. “I love the moments I spend playing with them, and it’s our third time at this event, always together with my two sons.”
Nintendo’s family-friendly games, recognised for their universal appeal, were a central aspect of the event. The more well-known ones, such as Mario Kart, are a game that the whole family can participate in.
David praised Nintendo’s innovation, citing the ‘Legend of Zelda’ series, especially ‘Breath of the Wild,’ for setting new standards in gaming. This game revolutionized open-world gaming with its vast world, offering unparalleled freedom to players. Its record-breaking sales reflect its success, particularly in the UK, where it quickly rose to the top of gaming charts.
In this competition, every participant will receive a card to keep track of their scores. If the participant successfully completes different Nintendo games, they will be awarded corresponding scores. At the end of the competition, the person with the highest score will receive prizes.
