A Welsh musician singing in both Welsh and Cornish has won the Welsh Music Prize with her debut album in Cardiff.
Gwenno Saunders won the 5th edition of the prize with her first album Y Dydd Olaf at an event at the Sherman Theatre.
Gwenno says: “I wasn’t expected that at all, I mean you never do. It’s an absolute honour and again as I said, congratulation to everyone who has made an album.”
Nominees included a total of 15 Welsh solo artists or bands singing in either Welsh or English and were assessed by 12 judges including producers, festival organizers, music writers and film makers.
Huw Stephens, event presenter and Radio 1 DJ says: “Gwenno won for her album which is sung in Welsh and Cornish. We are delighted that she won, you know, it’s a great album, the judges chose it and they were really happy for her.”
Neal Thompson, one of the judges says: “It was a very high standard of competition this year. Gwenno’s album, which is a great album, really stuck out and I think that makes a really good point of view within Wales, and outside of Wales as well, of the kind of music that we produce from this country. “
