More Than Just Trinkets—A Piece of Cardiff’s Heart

When traveling, people often make a trip to a souvenir shop before they leave, to buy souvenirs for themselves that represent the memories they cherish, preserve and pass on.

In Cardiff, there is one such impressive souvenir shop that has been in business for almost 9 years, situated right next to Cardiff Castle, which sells not only trinkets, but also a part of the spirit of the city.

One of the most special is the Welsh lovespoon. In Wales, giving a lovespoon as a gift to someone you like has been around for over 300 years. Once, a young man would carefully carve a lovespoon and give it to his sweetheart as a token of lasting affection. Today, the tradition continues and local artists still make these lovespoons.

In Wales, giving handmade lovespoons to your loved ones has been for over 300 years.

“Different lovespoons mean different meanings, one heart for love, two hearts for togetherness, and each shape has its own special meaning.” said Mahmood Juraije, 28, the manager of the shop.

Another gift that represents Wales is the red dragon, a symbol that is unique to Cardiff. Inside the shop, you can see various forms of red dragons, from those hidden in crystal balls to those painted on fridge magnets.

However, “it’s not easy running a souvenir business in a competitive city,” said Mr. Juraije. There are many souvenir shops in Cardiff and it’s not easy to stand out, but what makes this shop stand out is the fact that it’s not just the goods they offer, but the connection to the spirit and story of the city.

Before leaving Wales, pick a gift for yourself with pleasant memories.

In Cardiff, whether it’s a handmade lovespoon or a mighty red dragon, each item is tied to Cardiff’s rich history. Visitors to the shop don’t just buy a gift, they take away bits and pieces of the city that will inspire them to look back on their time in Cardiff long after they return home.
