Over 400 Cardiff residents dressed as Santas ran through Cardiff Bay last weekend to raise funds for defibrillators and CPR training.
According to the British Heart Foundation, each year, 9,000 people in Wales die from cardiovascular diseases, and 375,000 live with them. The Santa Dash raises awareness and provides resources to address these issues.
Chief Executive of Calon Hearts Sharon Owen said that: “Calon Hearts was founded 13 years ago. Over the past 13 years, Calon Hearts has saved 100,558 lives and placed more than 30,000 defibrillators across Wales. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our participants.”

Sarah Phillips, a regular Santa Dash participant who has joined the event three times, shared her personal connection to the cause. “This event is close to my heart because my father benefited from a defibrillator, and it reminds me of how vital Calon Hearts’ work is,” said Phillips. “The fact that so many supporters came to run with me inspires me to continue for heart health.”
The event typically starts with registration in the morning, and performances from local choirs to create a lively atmosphere for participants. The run starts in the Cardiff Bay, just before midday from Roald Dahl Plass. Everyone and their family, and yes, even their dog, join the run, giving it a joyful and festive vibe.

As local participants dressed as Santa Claus ran through the 5km route in Cardiff Bay, the area was transformed into a sea of red and white, creating a vibrant and festive scene in support of a vital cause.

“It’s incredible to see so many people supporting such a vital cause, spreading awareness, and making a tangible impact,” said organizer Jayne Cowan. “The event successfully raised over £9,600 this year, which will be used for installing defibrillators and offering CPR training across underserved areas in Wales.”
The organizers thanked all residents and volunteers for supporting this year’s Santa Dash. “Every contribution makes a difference,” said Cowan. Visit Calon Hearts’ website for future events.
