Cardiff City Council has slashed 58 green bag and food liner stockists.
The move was announced following the publication of an efficiency review on Monday January 3.
According to the council, the change was made to ensure the remaining green bag and food liner stockists are provided with sufficient stock.
With the new plan, Cathays will lose no less than eight stockists, as bags will no longer be offered at either of its two Spar stores or at The Post Shop on Salisbury Road.
Canton will lose five green bag stockists, including Easy Shop on Market Road and Lord Pontypridd House on Clive Road.
“I’m concerned that it shows the Council is reluctant to support local shops,” Rhiwbina’s Councillor Adrian Robson said. “For many elderly residents, this decision will cause further stress as they don’t want to wait and some are not in the possession of bags before they receive new ones.
“I think this is a backward step.”
In reaction to criticism, the Council’s cabinet member for Environment Ashley Govier said: “We need to make sure we get better supply. Our purpose is to get the distribution [of green bags] in the right direction.”
As part of the plans, local libraries and leisure centres will remain as primary stockists in the areas.
The council will also look to encourage residents to use the ring and request and their online service.
