Cardiff Devils face a tough match tonight against arch-rivals Nottingham Panthers as they struggle to regain lost momentum.
With just six games of the regular season left the Devils are in the final play-off spot in the Elite League table but could be pipped by Fife Flyers.
The Devils are still reeling from their 6-2 humiliation on Monday at the hands of the Sheffield Steelers, managed by former player and coach Gerad Adams. His replacement David Whistle will have his work instilling some much-needed confidence after a series of unexpected losses.
The team will be hoping to repeat previous victories over the Panthers, currently in fourth position, in order to boost themselves above tough competition. Hopes are riding on the Devils’ team pillar Jake Morissette to keep up his strong goal scoring record and for goaltender Kamil Kosowski to keep the Panthers from gaining any momentum.
With any luck Max Birbraer will be able to repeat his strong performance against the Steelers where he scored two goals in rapid succession. Recent form suggests the Devils won’t have any trouble scoring, but as in the recent game against Coventry Blaze they will have to guard against conceding late in the game, which could once more see them snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
It’s been a mixed season so far for the Devils, and tonight’s match is a chance for Whistle to make his mark on a team that desperately needs a firm hand. A win for the Panthers would strengthen their position as they look for a favourable play-off draw.
