Community gardens around Cardiff will be holding events for the first time tomorrow in aid of the Big Dig 2014.
The Big Dig 2014 Cardiff has been organised by Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens as part of a project called The Big Dig, which encourages people to go down to their local community gardens and get growing.
Before this year the event was primarily based in England.
Events will be held at four community gardens in Cardiff including Mackintosh Community Garden, Riverside Community Garden, Canton Community Garden Chapter and FareShare Community Allotment in Llanrumney.
Mackintosh Community Garden in Roath will be holding a volunteer workday from 12 noon-5pm followed by an Equinox Party from 5pm to 9pm with live entertainment and food and drink available.
Riverside Community Garden, awarded the best community growing project at the Keep Wales Tidy awards earlier this year, will see volunteers planting poppy seeds for this years’ First World War Centenary.
Volunteers will also help build a strawberry fence using recycled materials. The garden will open from 10am-3pm.
Sam Holt of Riverside Community Garden said: “The Big Dig event will help inspire people and build their confidence to grow their own food.
“At the moment the garden is only open during the week so the event will also give people the opportunity to come down on a weekend.
“If the weather is wet tomorrow we have a large shelter which can sit 20 to 30 people and two 11 meter deep polytunnels.”
Emma Williams, SEW Development Worker at Federation of City Farms & Community Gardens, said: “Cardiff is excited as it’s the first time this event has taken place in Wales.
“It’s a really good opportunity particularly as Cardiff is one of six sustainable food cities in the UK and the only one in Wales.”
