A group of Cardiff volunteers have five months to raise a total of £12,000 to build a farm and a learning centre at an orphanage in Ghana.
Registered charity Global Love Youth Trust is working with two organisations to make and sell upcycled furniture from unwanted wooden pallets and bike wheels.
Oasis Cardiff refugee and asylum seekers centre, in Splott and Howardian Youth Club, in Roath meet twice a week to help reach the target.
The charity’s founder Aaron Harrison said: “We also run small events, community days and have done a sponsored walk from Cardiff Castle to Castell Coch.
And we are setting up a JustGiving page.” A few years ago his colleague raised £300 for the o
rphanage after speaking to the person who had set it up.
“We went out with the hope this orphanage really existed,” he explained.
“We have been over three times since the first visit five years ago. The team will help develop the village farm and buy long-term crops to help it become self-sustainable.
They hope to start a community garden and nursery. As well as taking five computers with them to donate to the children they will also build a learning centre.
