A Cardiff man has come up with a solution to the problem of youths illegally riding motorbikes around the streets of his neighbourhood, and is aiming to meet with councillors to take it forward.
One of the biggest concerns to residents of Ely in recent years has been the rise in the number of people riding motorbikes along streets, around fields and on pavements, causing damage to the environment and endangering the lives of themselves and others.
One way to combat this, according to one resident, is to build a track or controlled area where the motorcyclists can ride safely. Ryan Sullivan, 21, from Pen Y Garn Road, Ely, says he thinks this is the only way to combat the problem.
“It all started because my step son has got into motocross”, said Mr Sullivan. “I have been riding bikes since I was five because my dad was into bikes.”
“We want to help solve the issue of finding somewhere legitimate for the kids to ride. They could be on a track competing against each other.
At an Ely, Caerau and Michaelston “Super PACT” meeting on Tuesday night, Mr Sullivan put his plans to councillors, police officers and residents.
“What we are trying to do is to get a track together which will be usable in all weather, all year round. I’m doing it for Ely and Caerau mainly, but I can help roll it out to the rest of Cardiff.
“We want to get children a legitimate place to go where they won’t get in trouble, hurt themselves, or endanger others. It is a big problem that can be solved.
“It can benefit people, it can create jobs and will be a self-sustaining thing.”
Councillor for Ely, Jim Murphy said: “They are riding these around and endangering themselves. I remember not too long ago, someone came out of Frank Road on a motorbike and hit a lamp post, boom, dead.”
“It will take a long time but it has gone quicker than I thought it would.”
Mr Sullivan and Coun Murphy are working to meet with councillor for Canton and Cardiff Council cabinet member, Ramesh Patel.
