Want to revel in Welsh Ashes history? Well look no further than the SWALEC stadium’s latest exhibition.
CARDIFF and Glamorgan County Cricket Club’s SWALEC stadium has opened a brand new exhibition entitled Glamorgan and The Ashes, featuring displays charting the county’s illustrious history in the Ashes series.
Hosted at the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket at the SWALEC Stadium, the exhibition coincides with the arrival of the Investec Ashes series trophy, which will take pride of place in the museum ahead of the first test on July 8.
During his flying visit to Cardiff last Friday, Prime Minister David Cameron was on hand to welcome the trophy to the stadium where it will stay until the eagerly anticipated test match at the home of Welsh cricket.
Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris said, “The Prime Minister is a keen cricket fan so I’m sure he is looking forward to the return of the Ashes in July as much as we are.
“The Investec Ashes Series is one of the major highlights of the sporting year, with huge crowds and superb action expected. The iconic scenes of Monty Panesar and Jimmy Anderson’s last wicket stand in Cardiff was one of the great memories of the 2009 Ashes and vital in the eventual outcome of the Series.”
The award-winning CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket is the first sports-specific museum in Wales and features a series of innovative interactive displays, one of which allows visitors a chance to bat against three legendary Welsh bowlers: Robert Croft, Don Shepherd and Simon Jones.
The museum celebrates the achievements of Jones, the Welsh bowler who played a pivotal role in England’s 2005 Ashes triumph, dubbed “the greatest series of all time”.
It also features a series of displays celebrating the long and rich history of cricket in Wales, from the game’s roots in the late 18th century.
Glamorgan County Cricket Club has curated the museum in partnership with CC4 – a Cardiff-based multimedia company and e-learning specialist – and has been developed thanks to financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund in partnership with Visit Wales.
Tickets are still available for the first test, with less than 100 remaining for the opening day on July 8.
